Character Questions:
1. Who is the person your character is most bonded with from their canon, or who is someone they miss the most and why?
Where there is a Sherlock Holmes there is a John Watson. For Herlock, his John Watson is Yujin Mikotoba, a Japanese student who had come to England to study. They spent six years together in London experiencing the quintessential Sherlock Holmes adventures in the Ace Attorney style before Yujin had to return to Japan. Their respective responsibilities keep them apart and while Herlock does not regret their choices he misses his partner dearly.
Additionally, this version is a guardian to a young girl named Iris so while his initial thoughts would go to Yujin, it'll eventually come to her. This would be the first time that he has spent any sort of time away from Iris since she came into his care. Iris had only recently started actively referring to him as her father and while this isn't a new development on his side it'll feel like a missed opportunity even with the knowledge that everything will still be there waiting for him.
2. What are they most afraid of and why?
While he knows this isn't something he can keep a secret forever, he's most afraid of Iris discovering the truth about her parents before she's ready for it. He wants her to be able to grow up without the spectre of her biological father's deeds hanging over her.
He's been so committed to this course that it has come at the cost of her only remaining biological family not knowing she exists for over a decade. And while Barok now knows who she is and they're both open to him having a relationship with Iris it's only because Barok is also on the same page as him in keeping their relation a secret for now.
3. What are their emotional, mental, and physical weaknesses and why?
Emotionally he comes across as rather childish, getting worked up at perceived minor insults, poking others for no reason other than because he can. He rarely takes into account other people's feelings before saying something because he just doesn't care to do so. He isn't cruel, but he seems to take the position that other people's reactions are their problem.
Mentally, he jumps ahead with his thoughts and can get ahead of himself leading to rude comments or incorrect conclusions. He usually needs someone to slow him down and make course corrections. And while he's capable of elaborate plans, he rarely shares them with others and prefers to instead manipulate the situation to suit his ends.
Not to mention physically, he's just a guy. He's fit and active, but he isn't much of a fighter in comparison to some characters.
4. What discrepancies are there between their inner self (who they feel they are) and their outer self (how they present themselves to others)?
There's not a lot of difference between Herlock's inner and outer self. He is aware of the kind of person he is and he's not ashamed of it nor does he feel there's anything he wants or needs to change about himself when interacting with others.
On one hand he's an eccentric man who has tried eating soap and on the other, he's a keenly observant genius that invents holographic technology in the Victorian era. There's no such thing where one aspect is his true self and instead all of them inform the man he is. What you see is what you get even if the end result is an incredibly puzzling man.
5. What would make them happiest and why?
If the question was posed to him he might say the satisfaction of a case solved. He enjoys solving puzzles and helping others and it is what he's best known for. He seeks to understand things so leaving a mystery unsolved is rather difficult for him.
However he is also a parent and seeing Iris happy and healthy would also work. She may have been dropped on him one day, but he's never regretted taking her in and watching her grow has been one of the greatest privileges in his life. Knowing he's doing right by her would be a great relief when this was something he had never considered doing before.
6. What characteristics does someone need to have to be your character's ideal significant other?
If you asked him he would say that he has no interest in such as they would only be a distraction to his work. He doesn't need a relationship to feel fulfilled and would be perfectly fine living the rest of his life without one.
But the type of person that would work well for him is someone who he could accept his idiosyncrasies, but doesn't allow him to run roughshod over them.
Although to be fair, his ideal significant other already exists and his name is Yujin Mikotoba. It doesn't matter what kind of relationship it is, Yujin is always going to be the only partner for him.
7. Would your character make a sacrifice to save someone else and why or why not?
Yes. In fact, he's already done it when he agreed to take Iris in and to remain in London while his greatest companion returned to his home country in Japan. In doing so he completely upended his life permanently. He chose to save an infant that had no connection to him when he was also the last person anyone would think to be able to look after a baby.
And how could he not? Iris had already lost so much the moment she was born, her father dead in what was officially recorded as the fifth victim in the Professor killings and her mother dying shortly after giving birth to her. She deserved more and Herlock was determined to try and give that to her.
8. What is one thing they would tell their younger self if they had the chance, or if your character is young, what is one thing they would want their older self to remember?
Herlock wouldn't say anything to his younger self if he had the opportunity. He would expect his appearance to convey all the relevant details to his younger self and if not, it means he's not ready yet.
In his younger years, he would have been a sharper, more intense person and what he would want to show them is that things do get better. He'll get more comfortable with life and he'll meet people he truly cares for one day.
9. When in dire circumstances does your character fight, flee, freeze or fawn and how does that look?
The ultimate goal in any circumstances would be to seek distance from the situation so he could think it over and figure out the best way forward. In a physical situation he would fight back as that wouldn't require as much of his attention, but when the pressures aren't physical he'd likely choose to flee to buy some time.
When Genshin was found guilty of the Professor killings and knew there was nothing further he could do at that moment he chose to back down. In the long term it was to fawn as he chose to hide that he hadn't considered the case closed to avoid any further attention from those who might have been watching him.
10. Why did your character make the wish they did?
Herlock already feels fulfilled in life and simply removing the pressure of ensuring he has enough to keep a roof over their heads is enough for him. Anything else he wants or needs is within his own ability to acquire.
When the question comes, it would put him a little bit on the spot as he doesn't have any burning wish he's wanted fulfilled so this would be the first thing that came to mind.
